An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has passed a fully accredited examination set by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). Prerequisites for the board examination include thousands of hours of clinical work and dozens of educational credits in Anatomy & Physiology, Cultural Diversity, Psychology & Counseling, Child Development, Nutrition. The IBLCE certification is recognized as the Gold Standard for health professionals working with breastfeeding women, and all IBCLCs are required to adhere to IBLCE’s Professional Standards.

A Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) has completed training that provides a solid, up-to-date, research based body of information regarding lactation as well the art of counseling. The training is based on the World Health Organization / UNICEF curriculum – an overview of what all health professionals who work with mothers and babies should know about breastfeeding. The designation Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), is awarded by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice to all learners who achieve a passing score on the test.
